Best Places in the Long Island Area to Snag a Tuna Dinner

Let’s Go Fishing: How, When and Where to Catch a Tuna in the Long Island Area

Did you know that the most common tuna on Long Island is the Yellowfin Tuna?  On average, these fish are 40 to 60lbs apiece, but have been known to grow as large as 250lbs.  In order to catch them, you’ll need to go a minimum of 12 to 20 nautical miles off the coast.  Prime season for tuna catching is July through October, and in the morning or evening hours when they are closest to the warm surface of the water.

Enjoy the fresh salty sea air and the wide open ocean views aboard a fishing charter from Long Island’s shores!  The most popular places to catch Tuna are along the shore where the Connetquot River and the Atlantic Ocean meet up to Montauk point.  Since catching tuna from the shore is very rare, you’ll need to book a charter or plan to do a lot of sailing/boating on your own.  These are some great places to take day trips or book a charter to snag your own catch of the day.

  • Lady Grace Charters runs tuna fishing charters between June and November.

  • The Susie E II runs Bluefin Tuna fishing charters with best results in July through September; Yellowfin, Albacore, and Bigeye are part of the deep sea charter fishing from July through October.

  • MOVIN ON Fishing Charters recommend July through September for tuna fishing charters.
