 Grab your camera, your picnic basket, and the latest in outdoor fashion, because it’s time to drive!  For today’s blog, we’re bringing you a list of some of the most scenic drives in New York State.  Whether you’re a casual photographer, looking for family portrait backdrops, or an avid landscape photographer, there’s a view for you here.   On less than a tank of gas, you can be on your way to some spectacular scenery.  Let’s go!

 

 

Upper Delaware Scenic Byway in Sparrow Bush

Full of twists, turns, and curves and some of the most breathtaking views in New York State as it cuts through the mountains and along the riverway.  It snakes its way through Delaware, Sullivan and Orange Counties with lots of overlook stopping points.

 

Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway in Clifton Park

A historic byway that runs along the route of the Erie Canal and both sides of the Mohawk River and connects local, county, and state highways from Schenectady and Waterford/Cohoes.

 

Five State Lookout in Acra 

Named for the panoramic overlook of five states as well as the Hudson River, this beautiful scenic stop in the Catskills is a can’t-miss-view!  You’ll want to bring your camera for this lookout point in Greene County

 

The Hawks Nest in Sparrow Bush

A beautiful winding roadway that least to a breathtaking overlook area of the Delaware River in Orange County.  You’ll need a steady hand and a calm driver for this one, as the road is very winding and full of twists and turns.  But you’ll be ultimately rewarded with canyon style cliffside views.  Prime viewing for sunrise and sunset photo ops.

 

 

Hudson Highlands State Park in Cold Spring

Take Route 9D in Cold Spring and you’ll see beautiful views of the mountains, forest, and river.

 This nearly 6,000 acre non-contiguous park runs through Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties.  Advanced hikers and very outdoorsy folk can choose an entry point, and enjoy any of the wooded trails for hiking or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, or grab your camera and enjoy some nature photography.  This park is not for the faint of heart, and proper outdoor gear is encouraged.  

Catskill Scenic Overlook in Kerhonkson

With gorgeous lakeside views, idyllic natural scenery, and picturesque mountain landscapes this is a great choice for photographers.  Located in the Catskill State Park area.  It’s a great rest point as well for a nice snack and hydration after a long hike in the area.  Beautiful all year and any time of day, but prime viewing hours are during sunrise and sunset as well as during the Autumn months.
